San Joaquin General Hospital has a long-standing commitment to excellence in graduate medical education and has proudly trained physicians since 1932. Today, San Joaquin General Hospital sponsors three residency programs: General Surgery, Internal Medicine, and Family Medicine, all of which are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
Our residency programs provide comprehensive, community-based training across inpatient and outpatient settings, with a strong emphasis on clinical skills and procedural experience. Residents care for a diverse patient population and gain valuable experience managing a broad range of medical conditions and healthcare needs.
In addition to providing a strong foundation in core clinical education, San Joaquin General Hospital embraces innovation and advances in medical education. Our programs are incorporating new technologies, including robotics training for surgical residents, while continuing to expand opportunities for scholarly activity and research. These experiences are designed to prepare our residents for successful careers in a rapidly evolving healthcare environment.
Our graduates have successfully pursued fellowship training and careers in private practice, hospital medicine, and other areas of medicine. Our Residency Programs
Three ACGME-accredited residencies, each with its own overview and application details.
Family Medicine Residency
Founded in 1972 and affiliated with UC Davis School of Medicine. Full-spectrum training built on longitudinal clinics, street medicine outreach and community partnerships, plus an Advanced OB fellowship.
Internal Medicine Residency
Training internists since 1932. A small, hands-on program with no competing fellowships, a simulation lab and bedside ultrasound curriculum, and a 100% ABIM pass rate over five consecutive years.
General Surgery Residency
High-volume trauma and acute care at the only Level II trauma center in San Joaquin County. Early operative autonomy, robotics training, and rotations at UC Davis, St. Joseph’s and Washington Hospital.

Denise Estrada has over 20 years of health care experience, specializing in medical staff organization and education.
Denise Estrada received a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Phoenix in Health Care Administration. Denise was born and raised in Stockton, she is active in the community and dedicated to the organization’s mission and values that include preparing residents for their careers in medical practice.
